29 January - Johannesburg Country Club
Bakos Trophy

John Abbott...Back with a Bang...
Takes Bakos trophy with stunning display...

After a year sabbatical from Phoenician golf John returned to blow away the Phoenicians with an astonishing exhibition of controlled golf to record a gross 35 and 24 points off his 10 handicap. (He was cut 3 shots in keeping with Phoenician rules). Unfortunately, the tournament was reduced to 9 holes because of the weather and with our last game played at Johannesburg CC in August 1999, the players were so looking forward to the day. We will return to the Country Club sooner than later!

Back to John, if taking a year break means success then maybe that's the way to go! John it was a pleasure to have you back where you belong, you were missed and we hope that you maintain the high standard you set for the rest of 2012. Well played!

Thank you to Norman and Dean for sponsoring.

26 February - Eye of Africa
Kalil Trophy

Ralph Rohana at his sublime best...
quality golf lifts title No: 6...

Our first ever visit to the Greg Norman Eye of Africa Golf and Leisure Club was widely acclaimed by all 45 Phoenicians. Here is a course which offers a fair challenge to both the low and high handicap golfer. There is something for everyone. We were pleasantly surprised at the magnificent layout and design.

If the majority approved what did the sweet-swinging Ralph Rohana have to say, nothing he let his clubs do the talking, however, don't be surprised if Ralph fills out an application for membership. For the record, Ralph played off an 11 handicap and shot 78 gross and 41 points, a round that included 2 birdies and 10 pars. A round which earns Ralph a neat snip of 4 shots off his handicap.

We don't think Ralph's going to worry too much about playing off a 7 handicap. On his day when it's all systems go, Ralph has arguably the most exquisite swing in the club, a delight to watch, well played! We are sure you are going to remember Eye of Africa with much satisfaction for a long while

Neville and Clive your sponsorship is always appreciated and we hope that Ron & Johan enjoyed their day

25 March - Pretoria CC
Kouries & Glen Michael Trophy

Victory!! ...Success for Gerald as he wins first Phoenician

If any player deserves Phoenician success it's Gerald Rohana. His game has improved rapidly over the years, so much so that he almost won the Order of Merit in 2010, failing by one point at the last hurdle. That year Gerald had 5 scores in the 30's and has been runner up more than once. Well, all the heartbreak has passed by as Gerald takes his rightful place in the winners circle.

The Pretoria Country Club was in tremendous condition and offered a genuine test to all calibre of golfers, both low and high handicaps. The Phoenicians had their work cut as they toured this tricky championship layout. In the end we can safely say that the course was the victor as the 39 players could only average a paltry 25.9 points, take a bow Pretoria CC.

Gerald fired a remarkable 37 points to win by 2 and in doing so played exceptional golf. It was a joy to behold the satisfaction and relief expressed by Gerald as he held the Keith Kourie and Glen Michael trophy aloft. It's always a pleasure to salute a first time winner. So we congratulate you Gerald, well played!

Keith, Glen and Craig, thank you yet again!
